The Commonwealth Games came to Manchester in July 2002 and most local organisations tried to take
advantage of the event to increase awareness and participation in their activities. The Guide Association
introduced a Commonwealth Game badge and although I am not 100% aware of the full ins and outs
part of the badge was to visit a club where one of the sports was being practiced. Hence the
visit of the 1st Woodford Brownies to the Dialstone Recreation Centre on 20th April 2002 to look
at a typical Gymastics training session.
The Brownies sat and watched displays on the bars, beam, tumble run, vault and floor. Then
it was time to have a go themselves. Most popular was the trampoline but they also had had
to experience strength and flexibility exercises on the floor. We hope that they all enjoyed the afternoon
and passed their badge.
